Een recent overzichtsartikel van Eduard Pop, Sofwan Noerwidi en Fred Spoor (Eugène Dubois leerstoelhouder 2024) biedt een frisse kijk op de benaming van Homo erectus. Getiteld “Naming Homo erectus: A review,” herziet de studie de holotype fossielen uit Trinil, Java, Indonesië, en trekt hun classificatie in twijfel.
Na de ontdekking van hominine fossielen in Trinil (Java, Indonesië) in 1891 en 1892, benoemde Eugène Dubois een nieuwe soort, Homo erectus. Er blijven echter vragen over de oorspronkelijke publicatie en het type exemplaar. Dit artikel verheldert deze kwesties en bevestigt de publicatie van 1893 als de oorspronkelijke benoeming. Het overzicht richt zich op discrepanties in morfologie en taxonomische affiniteiten, met name met de Trinil 3 femur en Trinil 1 molaar. De auteurs stellen voor deze omstreden exemplaren uit de holotype te verwijderen en suggereren dat de calotte het meest geschikte naamdragende exemplaar is.
